“Never, Ever Step on a Spider” is a story set in the ‘60s and early ‘70s about Bill and Louise Famous and their five children. It is an often hilarious tale that spans nearly two decades and includes eleven moves to six states due ostensibly to Bill’s frequent job transfers as an air-traffic controller. While it is clear early on the Famous marriage is doomed, somehow it lasts sixteen adventure-filled years during which time the children, particularly oldest daughter Annie and her sister Maggie, are blissfully unaware of the dysfunction that surrounds them because they are continually involved in their own misadventures. Then there’s younger sister Sophie, who is convinced she’s an adopted gypsy, and brothers Billy and Charlie, who are awash in well-meaning and often bemused female influence because their father is rarely around.
Over the years, the family encounters a bat attack, a hurricane and a tornado, several cross-country road trips at the hands of scotched-up Bill, a hepatitis scare, not to mention a couple of ghosts and one witch—Annie herself, whose spells are intended to make her crooked nose normal. Sorcery doesn’t suit the skittish Annie, however, and soon she is trading spells for boys who don’t mind big noses.
The Famous children learn many things from their beautiful mother Louise Laugh first and cry later; when life hands you doggy-do, wipe it up and hand it back; and most importantly, never, ever step on a spider…for reasons which will surprise you!

I enjoyed the story but my concern is the "cost" of the book. I am not a writer but love to read. What justifies $66 to buy it. As a "Prime member" I was able to borrow it for free.
